Pelagic Fishing
VESSELS of the Castletownbere pelagic fleet, which are presently fishing for
mackerel, are coming under severe pressure from both the Naval Service and
Department of the Marine fishing inspectors. They believe they are being unduly
harassed. It all began last October at the start of the mackerel fishing season
when two Castletownbere vessels were refused permission to land their catches of
mackerel at Dingle and were forced to proceed to Rossaveal in Galway in order to
land their catch at that port. Rossaveal and Killybegs are the only ports at
which the landing of mackerel was allowed under EU law. Fishermen say that a
practical solution on the weighing of fish is needed immediately if the
processing industry is to survive, and claim if this is not done, markets will
be lost. At the time, Mr Donal Kelly, manager of the Castletownbere-based
fishing company, Fast Fish Ltd., said that the Department officials in Dublin
had no concept of the reality on the ground. He went on to say that he had
pleaded with the Department officials for a bit of common sense, but to no
avail. A few weeks ago, when a Castletownbere fisherman arrived in
Castletownbere with his catch of mackerel, he found himself and vessel arrested
and charged with landing mackerel in the early hours of the morning. Donal
Murphy, skipper of the Ocean Venture, found himself before the Cork
Circuit Court in the first appearance of such a charge because he attempted to
land his catch between the hours of 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. The skipper pleaded guilty
and was fined E5,000, as well as confiscation of fish and nets. The value of the
fish was put at E4,000 and the nets were valued at E5,000. Last week, in another
incident, two Castletownbere-based vessels were detained and taken into Cobh by
the Irish Naval Service. In the meantime, a huge fleet of Dutch factory ships
are fishing away without hindrance scooping up tonnes of mackerel. They don’t
have to worry about landing their catches as they are able to process the fish
on board. Last week, one such vessel had such a heavy catch in its nets that the
crew were unable to take it on board and the vessel had to proceed to more
shallow ground at Pulleen Harbour, just west of Castletownbere, where, by
dragging the nets along the rocky shore, managed to split open the net and let
the fish go. The vessel then anchored at the eastern end of Castletownbere
Harbour in order to mend its nets before proceeding to the fishing grounds for
another catch. The result of this operation was that the smaller white fish
vessels from the local fleet when trawling in that area were getting huge
numbers of dead mackerel in their trawls. The state of affairs was well
summed-up in the editorial of the current number of The Marine Times, which
stated: “It could only happen in the not so merry island of Draconia where
regulations discriminate against native fishermen. If we were setting the scene
for a Shakespearean version of the Irish fishing industry we would have to
obviously start off with the opening lines of: ‘Something was rotten in the
state of Draconia and it wasn’t fish.’ Rules and regulations within the
industry can only be best described as draconian and blatant discrimination, so
much so that it has driven most of the pelagic fleet to foreign ports to make a
fair living. I mean, what Irish processors in their right mind want to pay
“X” amount for water? Who wants to turn up at an Irish port with a tank full
of fish and find that fishery officers have already clocked off for the day,
leaving the valuable commodity sitting on the dockside? These are just a few
situations that are frustrating everybody, especially when the regulators are
all denying culpability and ultimately denying people employment and revenue.”
There is a general feeling among fishermen that they are all being treated as
“those who need to be taught a lesson”.
Action Group
Several people have approached us recently regarding the Beara Action
Group office at the Square, Castletownbere, which, they claim, is always closed
when they call there. All we could tell them was that, when we checked this out,
this indeed seems to be the case. It appears that the office is closed since the
annual general meeting of the group in December when a new committee “took
over”. Beara Action Group was founded in 1994 with an office over Kelly’s
fish shop at the Square, Castletownbere, where they operated from for two years,
rent free, before moving to the office near the fire station. This office was
open six days a week from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and it provided a business
service for everyone, especially groups and voluntary organisations. It helped
with typing, CVs, letters, etc., photocopying, laminating, binding, flyers,
booklets and internet access. It also provided training for FÁS community
employment workers who went on, in most occasions, to full-time work. It is also
interesting to note that the Beara Action Group was one of the successful
applicants for grants from the Western Committee of Cork County Council. It
received a grant of E2,000 for the purchase of a digital camera and a
photocopier. Other successful applicants for grants in the Beara area included
Mna na Mara, who received a grant of E5,000 for the erection of a memorial for
fishermen lost at sea. Adrigole Family Resource Centre received E1,500 for the
purchase of laptop computers and printers for community; Castletownbere computer
classes; Castletownbere Family and Community Resource Centre received E2,000 for
same. The Irish Sports Council (National Waymarked Ways Advisory Committee) got
E20,000, E5,000 of this is for the Beara Walkway.
95th BIRTHDAY
Congratulations to Pat Harrington, Ballinakilla, Bere Island, who
celebrated his 95th birthday during the week. Retired school teacher Pat
celebrated the event at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Castletownbere, where he was
joined for the celebration by his sons, daughters, family and friends. Happy
birthday, Pat.
Married
His many friends in Beara will be delighted to learn of the marriage
which took place recently in Thurles, Tipperary, between John Barker and The
Right Hon. Rosetta-Anne Paxman (née O’Neill), eldest daughter of the late
Lord Rathcavan and the Dowager Lady Rathcavan. (Lord Rathcavan was the former
Terence O’Neill, Prime Minister of the Six Counties Government). John Barker
resided in Bere Island for a number of years before moving to The Rectory, The
Glebe, Castletownbere and Clouglaskin, where he and his family had extensive
lands.
Late Patrick Hanley
Widespread and deep regret has been felt over a wide area by the death
of Patrick (Paddy) Hanley, Bawnard, Eyeries, which occurred at St. Joseph’s
Hospital, Bantry, last week. Sporting and musical interests were always among
his leisure-time pursuits and he was a fine singer, always ready to entertain at
a party. A most popular gentleman, his untimely passing was learned with sincere
sorrow by his family, many friends and neighbours. Testifying to the high regard
of deceased and his family, there was a very large and representative attendance
at the removal of remains to Eyeries Church, where they were received by Fr.
Eamonn Mulvihill, P.P. Concelebrated Requiem Mass was offered on Thursday by
Rev. Fr. Martin Sheehan, C.C., assisted by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill, P.P., and Fr.
Sean O’Shea, following which the funeral took place to Gortnabulliga cemetery,
where the three priests officiated at the graveside in the presence of another
huge concourse of sympathisers bidding farewell to a fine friend and colleague.
He is survived by his brother, Finbar, sisters, Peig, Anna, Kathleen, Evelyn,
Julia Mai, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces and many other
relatives to whom sympathy was extended.
New Arrival
Congratulations to Caroline and Connie Murphy, Clounaglaskin,
Castletownbere, on the birth of their first child, a baby boy.
Council Office
When some years back Cork County Council built new offices and depot at
Foildarrig, people wondered why they kept on their old office and depot at the
West End of the town. At a recent meeting of the Western Committee of the County
Council, the following motion by Castletownbere councillor Noel Harrington was
discussed: “The Council would transfer all activity from the depot at West
End, Castletownbere, to the Area Office site at Foildarrig, Castletownbere, as
soon as possible.” The matter was discussed at the Bantry/Skibbereen Area
Committee and the following is an extract from that meeting: The Senior
Executive Engineer in Castletownbere said that, before this transfer takes
place, it will be necessary to build a new Council store/workshop building at
Foildarrig. Plans for this building are almost complete and will be forwarded
for planning under Part 8 of the Local Government Planning and Development
Regulations 2001. The question of funding for this project will have to be
addressed. Mr. Harrington suggested that the sale of the Council depot at West
End, Castletownbere, might provide the necessary funding for the new depot. The
members agreed that the Council should proceed with the planning under Part 8 of
the Local Government Planning and Development Regulations 2001.
31 Card Games
The Haven Family & Community Resource Centre are organising a series of
31 Card Games over the coming weeks. These are being held to encourage
those who do not know how to play the game to come along and learn, for those

'non-competitive' game - in a warm, friendly and social atmosphere. Those
who play on a regularly are also asked to come along and teach those who wish to
learn. It is open to everyone over the age of 16yrs. On Monday
nights, the venue is the Community Rooms at Eyeries and on Friday nights, it is
at Cahermore School. Starting time at both places is at 8.00pm
Negotiations are ongoing to start in Rosmackowen School in the next week or so.
