Spanish Trawler Goes up on the rocks on her departure from Castletownbere Port

M.F.V. 'Akilla Mendi' on the rocks by Bere Island

The Spanish Registered 'Akilla Mendi' veered too much to the left as she departed the port this afternoon, ending up on the western shore of Bere Island, inside the Harbour Entrance.  Thankfully, there were no injuries to any of the crew, and the vessel will endeavour to come off on her own steam when the tide rises.

A frequent visitor to the Castletownbere Harbour over the last few months is the new lighthouse service vessel 'Granuaile'.  This vessel is fitted with a helipad to facilitate the landing at sea of the helicopter.  Because of her size, she is unable to enter the port and berth at either pier.
