Ambulance for Chernobyl
On Sunday last, April 1st., Patricia Daly set out from Ardgroom to drive an Ambulance to Chernobyl with a convoy of others bring supplies to the country trying to rebuild following the disaster of 1988. The Fund Raising for the Ambulance began last year with several local people offering to shave their heads to raise money. Other fund raising activities which included table quizes, raffles etc., have been onging since, resulting in the purchase of an Ambulance which is badly needed there. The Ambulance was packed solid with supplies of all kinds and included four sacks of cuddly toys - donated by the children of Scoil An Croí Ró Naofa as well as a cheque for £360 which they raised for the children in Chernobyl. Each year, children from Chernobyl come to Beara to spend a month in host family homes here where they mingle with children from the area for a well deserved holiday. This holiday can extend their lives by up to two years. The children in Beara have opened their hearts to these children and there are lot of tears when they return. However, their plight goes on and the children here in Beara have not forgotten them. Best of luck to you Patricia on your long journey and well done for all your tremendous efforts. A big thank-you also to all the people who helped and donated towards the purchase of the Ambulance. We hope it will ease somewhat the burden being experience by the children over in Chernobyl. |
