Last weekend, in brilliant weather conditions, 103 members of Berehaven Golf Club played to win the 2001 Captain - John Crowley - Prize. Indeed John catered for those who didn't win - with an array of prizes for runners-up that were vied for also. The competition was an 18-hole Stroke on Saturday and Sunday with the best 21 qualifiers to play off in a 13-hole Stroke on Sunday afternoon. The results were very close in the end.
John began his speech by welcoming the large crowd who turned up for the occasion. He also welcomed the Lady Captain, Christina O'Sullivan and President, Donal O'Sullivan and thanked them for supporting his native Adrigole's colours (red and white) for the occasion, a banter that was met with mixed but jovial reception by those who attended. He thanked everyone who played and hoped they enjoyed their game of golf. He also thanked the Green Keeper, Brendan Hanley and his colleagues on the excellent condition of the course and how it was such an honour for him that his competition was the first one to be played on all of the new greens. Joe Harrington, Manager of the Clubhouse and his staff were also complimented by John in the way they worked with him throughtout the week-end and indeed the whole term while Captain.
Donal and Christina, thanked John for all the help and encouragement throughout the year and praised him highly on the lovely array of prizes that were played for.
Christina then called on the winners of the Ladies Prizes - that were played for the previous week-end and John presented them. The winner, Tracy D.O'Sullivan addressed all those there stating that she was indeed thrilled to have won and thanked her playing partners on the day and commented on the excellent condition of the course.
He then presented his prizes to the Best Visitors and Juniors before listing off in descending order the order of merit of his competion (see below for full results). He came to the winner, Kevin Nolan and complemented his playing as he was only a novice and encouraged him to keep it up. Kevin in his speech thanked everyone involved and said he was thrilled to have won. John then went on the say that he had two special prizes - the first one going to GreenKeeper Brendan Hanley for his hard work and effort and the second one to the Manager of the Clubhouse, Joe Harrington, in the hope that he may someday take up the actual game of golf instead of listening to what everyone has to say about it. John went on to finally thank everyone who helped him in every way throughout the year and especially his fianceé Amy Sheehy for her encouragement and patience, his parents and his extended family.
