Chernoble Mural

Adi Roche, who opened the 9th Beara Arts Festival in the Community School last Saturday 22nd July, viewing the Mural painted by Chernoble Children while holidaying here in Beara last month, with Deirdre Keohane, who guided and assisted the children.

This summer Castletownbere hosted 16 Chernobyl children to individual families throughout Beara. Along with parties, a trip on the Naval Vessel and kayaking, one of the projects the children participated in was an 8x8 ft. Mural co-ordinated with Deirdre Keohane a local painter/muralist.

The project is one of 5 murals which can be viewed during the Beara Community Arts Festival, (July22nd –Aug.7th).

The theme of the mural is the story of Vaselisa and Baba Yaga.

The story of a young girl, Vasilisa, who alone must learn to develop her skills when, confronted with a powerful evil, the witch Baba Yaga.

“I picked this story because I knew it would be familiar to them as it is a popular Slavic tale and because it is a story of how we are forced to learn to be strong when confronted by powers that are greater than our own. Plus the imagery in the tale is so wild!” says Keohane  Keohane went on to do individual portraits of each child in the centre of the mural.

The mural is up for auction and all proceeds will go to the Ambulance Fund, starting price IR£300.00.  (see our programme of events under 'Festival Events' on the paper.)
