Christmas Tree of Remembrance |
Gerdie Harrington switching on the lights |
The Christmas Tree of Remembrance was switched on by Beara Person of the Year Gerdie Harrington on Friday evening last 8th December at St. Joseph's Hospital. Canon Patrick Sheehan, Fr. Sean O'Shea and Maud Levis blessed the tree beforehand and asked everyone to remember all Beara people who are no longer with us. Maud Levis asked that we especially pray for the families of those involved in the Trawler Tragedy last month. Following the switch-on, the Choir rounded off the Ceremony by singing Christmas Carols and were joined by all those who attended.
This is the 5th year of erecting the Christmas Tree of Remembrance, whereby each bulb is purchased by a loved one to remember at Christmas time those who have passed away. The proceeds each year goes to some local Charities - this year they include, the Hospice at St. Joseph's Hospital, R.N.L.I. and Co-Action Beara.
The Christmas Street Lighting and Tree were switched on by Santa later on the same evening in Castletownbere following his visit to Ford Ri Hotel where he met with the young children from Castletownbere and Beara.
