Derry (Cornelio) O'Donovan,
Honary Spanish Vice-Consul for Cork, pictured with the Capt. of the MV
'Serviola' - Spanish Naval Ship, which paid a courtesy visit to the port
of Castletownbere last Thursday, 9th August.
This is the first time in 400 years that such a visit has been made by a Spanish Navy Vessel. The Ship 'Serviola' with a crew of 35, is from El Ferrol, La Coruna. After docking in the pier, the officers and crew were treated to a Barbeque at 'The Hole in the Wall' beer garden, organised by Derry and his wife Elizabeth, where they mingled with the Spanish families, now living and working here in Castletownbere as well as the locals. Following the barbeque, they joined in the Festival atmosphere by dancing the night away in the Square - at the Open-Air Disco. At 11.00 am the following day, they departed from the port - lets hope it isn't 400 years more before the next visit. |
