Run in conjunction with Excellence Ireland, the SuperValu awards are in recognition of consistent hygiene controls in all aspects of food preparation and retailing. SuperValu, which was launched in 1979 with 27 independent stores, now accounts for 18% of the Irish grocery market, with 14,500 people employed in local stores. The group was established an unrivalled reputation for award-winning hygiene systems, holding more certificates from Excellence Ireland than any other supermarket group in Ireland.
102 Hygiene Awards and Certificates were presented by the Minister to SuperValu store owners this year. The prestigious National Hygiene Mark 2000awarded by Excellence Ireland went to 101 SuperValu stores and the SuperValu Hygiene Certificate was presented to one further outlet.
Standards of Excellence Praised
Presenting the awards, Minister Joe Walsh paid tribute to the contribution SuperValu has made to promote Standards of Excellence in Irish food retailing.
“SuperValu’s dramatic growth in the Irish retail market can be attributed to the standards that individual owners set for their business. Consumers demand high standards of service, of product quality and particularly food hygiene and safety. In achieving the hygiene Mark, SuperValu stores are reassuring consumers and setting an example that "all retailers should match” the Minister said.
“While food technology and retailing has become more advanced, the fact remains that proper hygiene systems are an essential part of the modern supermarket operation. You can take risks in the food business, where people’s health is concerned. In SuperValu, the needs and welfare of the consumer are central to the way we do business and our success reflects this consumer-centred approach.” Mr McGettigan said.
