| After
several wides,
Beara were first to score with a great point from Maureen Sullivan.
Eimear O'Dwyer scored another very important point but then East
Cork took over.
However, due to great defensive work from the Beara backs, they
only managed to score two points in the first half.
It
was very frustrating first half with numerous opportunities being
missed by both teams. When Vicki Power finally broke through to score a
goal,
and two further points before the break, Beara looked well on their
way.
This brought the half time score to 1-4 to 0-2.
When
play resumed, East Cork came out with guns blazing and completely took
over despite the fact that they had a girl sent off in the first half.
They launch wave after wave of attack but failed to break through
the Beara defence to score that elusive goal but did manage to score four
points without reply.
However, despite the fact that they brought the difference back to
one point with eight minutes remaining, the situation could have been very
different if not for the resilience of the stalwart Beara defence.
Catriona Murphy in goal brought off two wonderful saves.
She was well supported by the full back line of Sinead Power,
Natalie Sugrue and Rachel Sheehan.
The half back line of Lisa O'Sullivan, Jessie Russell and in
particular, Emma Murphy
were absolutely brilliant on the day and played a huge part in
holding onto the title again this year.
Fiona Grace at centre field
was a tower of strength and scored a very important point which helped to
bring the Beara girls back into the game.
The half forward line of Ruth Power, Eimear O'Dwyer and Maureen
Sullivan worked hard as did the full forwards, Christine O'Sullivan, Lisa
O'Sullivan and Fiona O'Sullivan but East Cork defence was not easy to
break down.
They continued to attack and scored two more points.
The tension was unbearable as time was running out and it was still
anybody's game.
Play swung from end to end with everyone giving it their all and
this was no place for the faint hearted.
Amy O'Sullivan joined the Beara attack and Vicki Power who had been
moved to the forward line scored her second goal of the day and this gave
some breathing space.
When Christine O'Sullivan goaled again for Beara, there were huge
cheers but after some controversy this goal was disallowed.
Vicki Power added another two points which brought the final score
to 2-9 to 0-8.
This was a wonderful game of football which was played in energy
sapping conditions and great skills were displayed by both sides.
It
was a proud but exhausted Vicki Power who accepted the Fr. Liam Kelleher
trophy from vice-chairperson, Micheal O'Sullivan who complimented Beara on
making it Five in a Row, a remarkable achievement.
