A
group of twenty two children from Scoil an Chroí Ró-Naofa travelled to
Paric Uí Chaoimh to take part in the annual Cork City Sports were over
6,000 children participate for trophies and much coveted medal.
Although the weather did its best to dampen spirits, the effort
and enthusiasm of the children outshone any downpore.
The
morning started at 9.30 a.m. with the girls races.
Jacqueline Murphy and Ciara O’Driscoll ran great races the
under 7’s and were unlucky to finish just outside the trophies. In
under 9’s Jessica Cross finished 2nd winning the first
trophy of the day and Fiona O’Sullivan came a very close 4th.
With a great performance in under 10’s Katie Stevens won her
race and progressed to the semi-finals where she finished 4th.
Jane O’Sullivan also put in great effort in the same race.
Genevieve
Collins and Clodie Harrington in under 11’s put in great performance
and were unlucky not to win trophies.
A
tremendous race was run in under 12’s with Harriet Cross coming in 1st
and Emma Murphy coming in 2nd, both winning trophies.
Harriet progressed to the semi-final and came in 1st
and then on to the final where she battled hard to the finish line being
narrowly beaten for the county medal.
In under 13’s Emma Hanley and Amanda Murphy ran a tremendous
race with Amanda finishing 1st.
Amanda then progressed onto the semi-final and again onto the
final where she brilliantly won the over all County Medal she also
represented the school in the long jump where she finished 2nd
with a jump of 3.98 meters.
In the relays the
excitement and tension was high, the under 11 girls team were Katie
Stevens, Genevieve Collins, Fiona O’Sullivan and Jessica Cross, and
they finished 2nd with trophies for each of them.
Under 13 girls relay team
of Emma Hanley, Amanda Murphy, Emma Murphy and Harriet Cross won their
race with trophies for all and the Waldron Cup for the school.
The
afternoon was for the boys and they got off to a flying start with under
7’s James Murphy coming in 3rd and winning the first trophy
of the afternoon. In under
8’s Dean Hegarty ran well as did under 10 Richard O’Dwyer and David
O’Sullivan-Greene. In
under 11’s Ryan Murphy and Keith Stewart also put in tremendous effort
and Christopher O’Driscoll in under 12’s finished 2nd
winning a trophy and Fiach Dillon also ran well.
Under
13’s was the final heat of the day and was very tight with both
Stephen Hanafin and Neil Murphy fighting for the finish line with Neil
coming in just ahead of Stephen and narrowly securing is place in the
semi-final where he finished 4th.
Then
once again onto the relays, the under 11 boys team of Richard O’Dwyer,
Ryan Murphy, David O’Sullivan-Greene and Keith Stewart finished a very
close 4th and they all a tremendous relay.
Under
13 relay team of Christopher O’Driscoll, Neil Murphy, Fiach Dillon and
Stephen Hanafin were excellent, they finished a very close 2nd
with Stephen having an outstanding last run and they all ran trophies.
Well
done to all the children who took part and for the effort they all put
into the training before hand, and a big thank you to the organisers of
this event. The school won
a total of 22 trophies, I cup and a county medal.
