 |
June Bank Holiday Week-end saw the begining
of festivies planned to celebrate the Siege of Dunboy in 1602 and the
O'Sullivan's Beare historic march to Leitrim which took place in
1603. Weather for the week-end was very kind and rain (which has
been very prevalent of late) stayed away for most of the week-end.
On Saturday last, the "Bantry Long Boat" left the Sheep's
Head Peninsula en route to Bere Island accompanied by the Castletownbere
Coast Guard Safety Boat, re-enacting the Route taken by the Crown Forces
attacking Dunboy Bay. Talks took place on Bere Island covering the
build-up for the Battle of Dunboy and a "Dunboy Summer
School" led by Beara Historical Society hosted a Conference in Beara
Community School, with lectures on various aspects of the O'Sullivan Clan
and the events which took place in Dunboy in 1602.
On Sunday afternoon,
Deputy Clan Chief Nealie O'Sullivan (Chief Michael Ed O'Sullivan was
unable to attend due to illness and was wished a speedy recovery by
everyone) welcomed the huge crowd gathered at the grounds in Dunboy for
the celebrations. Talks on the Battle of Dunboy were given by Mr
Connie Murphy and on the "March to Leitrim" by The Heritage
Council before the unveiling of a plaque for the 400th Anniversary of
O'Sullivan Beara. This was followed by words from Michael Manning of
Bord Failte & Cork Kerry Tourism, Joss Lynam of the National Waymarked
Ways Committee and John Murph, Chairman of Beara Tourism & Development
Association. This was then followed by a re-enactment of the Battle
of Dunboy, music by Ashley & Noreen and Set Dancing and
Traditional Music and Entertainment until 17:00. This was followed
by a Banquet at the Cametringane Hotel. |
