The venue on saturday afternoon, 30th August was the
Ardagh Martello Tower in Bere Island where the tower was re-opened
following extensive re-furbishment - grant-aided by the Millennium Fund,
Irelands Fund, FAS and Dept. Community, Arts and Gaeltacht.
Pauline Hurley was M.C. for the afternoon and introduced historians Ted
Sullivan and Connie Murphy who gave a brief account of what the tower
was used for in earlier days. Following this, Deputy Joe Walsh was
called upon to cut the ribbon, aided by the eldest member of Bere
Island, Ted (Bawn) Harrington. After this there was a pageant
performed by members of the community of the conflict between O'Sullivan
Bere and Carew. A suckling pig was roasted in a pit nearby and
everyone was allowed to sample. The festivities then continued at
the village with open-air music and dancing in the street. Members
of the USS THE SULLIVANS Navy Ship attended and a fantastic afternoon
was had by all.
