| On Friday last, Castletownbere saw the arrival of the
newest addition to its fishing fleet. MFV Sarah David sailed in
glorious weather conditions, escorted by local trawlers, vessels large
and small from the area and on invitation - the Castletownbere RNLI
Lifeboat. She took on board members of family and friends at the
eastern entrance of Bere Island. From here to the pier, horns
blew, flares were fired (having first obtained permission from the
Coastguard) and bonfires blazed to herald the new vessel to the port of
Castletownbere.
One of the first stories written by bearainfo.com back
in June 2000 was the arrival of the Dawn Ross. Indeed, this vessel
is owned by the same family and both boats are named after the 4
Minehane children.
A huge crowd awaited the vessel on the pier at
Castletownbere and they were treated to a tour of the boat when she
docked. Everyone awed at the size of the vessel - the largest in
Castletownbere to date - and also by the equipment throughout her.
Nealie Minehane then treated everyone to a complimentary drink and the
stream of people continued to visit until late evening. Nealie's
son and partner in this boat was out fishing their other boat 'Dawn
Ross' along with Ross, his brother. Sarah was working but arrived
later on in the evening to join the festivities. Dawn, pictured
below, was on board when she docked.
We wish Nealie and David every success for the future
and hope he doesn't encounter too much bureaucracy in obtaining his
licence, tonnage etc. from the powers that be. May all who sail on
her be happy and safe. |
