Mekanord NAMING OF VESSEL IN SWEDEN The new Sarah David was named in the traditional
manner, by the breaking of a bottle of champagne on the bow, by Sarah and
David Minihane at an official ceremony in Ronnang,
Sweden on Friday 25th July. Ronnang is situated on the island of Tjorn which
lies on the west coast of Sweden, north of Gothenburg. Tjorn covers an area of
167 square kilometres and is linked to the mainland by the well known Thorn
bridge. Ronnang is one of Sweden's leading fishing ports in terms of the value
and volume of fish landed. Fishing and fish processing are handled by a large
number of different firms and plans are in hand for future
development including the establishment of a specialist school for the fishing
industry. The naming ceremony for the Sarah David was attended
by the Minihane family and some of their friends as well as the workforce in
the boatyard. The Lord Mayor of the municipality of Tjorn was also in
attendance and extended a warm welcome to the visitors from Ireland. On behalf
of the boatyard the owner, Mats Arvidsson, thanked David and Neil Minihane for
selecting his boatyard to build their vessel and wished them every success
with the boat and good fortune for the years ahead. Both David and Neil thanked the boatyard and the
staff for all their efforts in completing the vessel in such a short period of
time. From the time the hull of the vessel arrived in Ronnang from Riga it was
completely outfitted and finished in just 11 weeks. This performance could
hardly be matched by any other boatyard they said. The owners also thanked the
designer of the vessel Jan Erik Abraharnsson who complied with their own ideas
of design and layout. They also expressed their gratitude and thanks to their
bankers A1B, Castletownbere, their Surveyor Seán McNelis, Department of
Communications, Marine and Natural Resources and BIM for their assistance to
date, all the equipment suppliers and the numerous other people who had
provided assistance with the project. The occasion was further marked with a celebratory
dinner for over 100 people in the boatyard premises on Saturday 26th July The
music provided was distinctly Irish and an enjoyable night was had by all
concerned. The Sarah David left Ronnang on Sunday 3rd August and
will arrived in Castletownbere on Friday 8th August PROFILE OF OWNERS The owners of the Sarah David are the father and son
partnership Neil and David Minihane. David Minihane who is joint owner of the
vessel will act as the vessel's skipper. David is 25 years of age and
has been fishing on his father's vessels since he was 16 years
old. He commenced fishing in 1995 on the old Sarah David, a 24 metre wooden
hulled vessel built in Killybegs boatyard. In 1997 David obtained his
skipper's certificate at the BIM training school in Greencastle and
immediately took over as skipper of the Sarah David. When the 28 metre Dawn
Ross was delivered from Spain in 2000 David took the skipper's position and
has been fishing the vessel to the present time. Neil Minihane who is the other joint owner of the new
vessel has been involved in fishing for 30 years. He began as crewman on the
23 metre Fairweather fishing for herring out of Dunmore East, Cobh and Schull
in 1972. In 1977 he purchased the 8 metre Cunnamore Glory and fished for
lobster, salmon and shrimp from Galley Head to Roaring Water Bay. In 1979 he
took what was then a big step in taking delivery of a new 14 metre boat Star
of David from the O'Driscoll Boat Building company. In 1985 Neil went bigger again when he purchased the secondhand 20 metre Girl Geraldine and continued on the upward slope purchasing the 24 metre Dawn Ross (ex Sandra Patricia) in 1988 and the 26 metre Sarah David (ex Gary Og in 1996. When the Whitefish Programme was introduced in 1998 Neil ordered and took delivery of the 28 metre Dawn Ross. Neil, who is the holder of a skipper's certificate,
has an excellent track record in the fishing industry and has made a success
of every boat he has owned. He is regarded as one of the leading demersal and
pelagic fishermen in the country and has not been reticent in re-investing his
earnings back into the industry.
The new Sarah David is 37.30 metres overall length
with a transom stem and is built in steel. The vessel is dual decked and the
aluminium deckhouse is fitted aft of midship. The steel hull was built at Riga
shipyard in Latvia. The vessel is equipped and outfitted to fish for
demersal and pelagic species and is capable to avail of any other fishing
opportunities which may become available in the future. The introduction of its
447 G.T. capacity is being compensated by the withdrawal of 3.5 active licences
belonging to the owners. The old Sarah David, which was originally the Killybegs
built Gary Og, has been renamed Atlantic Venture and will continue to fish in
the joint ownership of Donal Murphy and Neil Minihane. The new vessel is powered by a Caterpillar diesel
engine type 3606 with an output of 1119 kw. This unit is fitted with a Mekanord
gearbox, P.TO and a Leroy shaft generator. The generators on board are driven by
two Caterpillar diesel engines, one type 3306 and one type 3414. The deck machinery on board was supplied by Lidan Marine of Sweden and comprises the
following: 3 x 32 ton split winches 1 x 20 ton split net drum 1 x 40 ton single net drum 1 x 20 ton single net drum 1 x anchor winch 2 x 3 ton outhauling winches 1 x 10 ton cargo winch 1 x netsounder winch 1 x auto trawl A comprehensive electronic package was fitted on the
vessel by Barry Electronics of Killybegs and includes the following main items
of equipments: Furuno FCV 24 Colour Sonar Furuno FCV 1200 L Colour Sounder Scanmar Trawl System Furuno SC60 Gyro Compass Furuno radars models FR 2115 and FR 7062 Sodena Plotter Max Sea Plotter Tenfjord electric/hydraulic steering gear is fitted.
A four bladed 2900mm diameter C.P. propellor is housed in a steel nozzle. The vessel is fitted with two slush ice making
machines and the cargo hold is refrigerated.
