| This year's annual event was run off in glorious sunshine
yet again - with record crowds turning up to take part in or view the
various events. Once again, MC for the day Teddy Black kept
everyone entertained with his wit and banter as he comentated on the
various races taking part. Indeed, he himself took part in the
Water Polo event - and emerged in the winning team - having scored a lot
of goals on the way. The tide was in and made the taking part
easier as well as being closer for the spectators enjoyment.
The first events of the day were Raft Races -the first time for such
events to be held here - with many make-shift rafts taking place. This
proved to be a huge success and it is hoped that this event will be even
bigger and better as the years progress. Various swimming races
were then run off for the young and old before the climax of the evening
- the Water Polo Matches. 2 teams for the Junior Event and 4 teams
took part in the Senior Event - 5 on each team - the Golden Oldies
coming out victorious in the Senior Team
Secretary, Margaret Downey-Harrington was busy taking names of
competitors aided by helpers Helen Healy, Ann O'Sullivan and Lil
McCarthy. A very busy bar-b-que point kept everyone fed and cold
soft drinks were also available to quench the thirst from the hot
summer's day - ably run by Kevin and Lisa Downey. Seating was
provided by the committee for the comfort of the spectators and traffic
to and from the event was well managed - an all round well run event.
The Chairman Denis Regan and hard-working committee presented a
cheque for 400 Euros to Mr. Joe Turner, Treasurer of the Castletownbere
Fundraising RNLI Committee - net proceeds from the Annual Christmas
Swim. |
