The Annual celebration of Mass at the Holy Year Cross once again proved to be a most meaningful and joyous occasion. More than 250 people undertook the climb to the summit. Visitors from as far away as Australia and America took part in this very spiritual and joyous celebration. As usual the weather played a large part in planning the occasion and the organisers made a wise decision to postpone it from Sunday to the Bank Holiday Monday - on that morning the congregation was blessed with glorious sunshine. The Mass was offered for the repose of the soul of Bartley Dennehy, R.I.P. who is sadly remembered by his family and all the people of Bere Island. His friends did the Readings and the Prayers of the Faithful. His little sister, Margaret, read her own moving prayer for him.  In his sermon Fr. Joe Harrington spoke on the theme of "love". He remembered asking a group of students once "What is love?". The answer which impresssed him most was "Love is making sacrifices for others". He encouraged all the congregation to love and care for one another in this small island community. The Cross had been newly painted for the occasion and decorated with red and white flags. A big Thank You to all the volunteers who participated in this work - especially Barry, John Joe, Kay and Oliver. A special Thank You to Fr. Joe Harrington for celebrating this Mass. He promised to be back next year, and indeed all those present hopedthey would be too.
