  Injured Fisherman brought to safety

A Ghanian national fishing on a Spanish registered vessel with serious arm injuries was brought to safety this morning by Castletownbere Lifeboat.

At 5.30 a.m.  this morning  Valentia Coastguard radio was requested  to assist an injured fisherman from the 36 metre Spanish registered fishing vessel “Neuvo Nemesia”. The man, in his early thirties, had caught his arm in a winch yesterday and had a suspected crushed arm, broken elbow and dislocated shoulder. The vessel was at this stage located fifty miles south of Castletownbere.

At 5.50 a.m., Castletownbere’s 52’ all weather RNLI lifeboat ‘Murray Loirne’ was launched, under command of 2nd Deputy Coxswain Paul Stevens and with  crew Brendan Gonnelly,  Dan Murphy, Darren Morlsley, Paddy O’Conor, Martin Cronin, Philip O’Driscoll, and Lorraine Murphy. The “Neuvo Nemesia” was steaming towards Castletown and was met at 7.40. a.m. by the lifeboat twenty nine miles south of Ardnakinna lighthouse. Conditions were moderate and the lifeboat was manoeuvred alongside the fishing vessel while the casualty was prepared for transfer. The injured man was lowered on to the foredeck of the lifeboat and made comfortable in the wheelhouse, and remained under observation until the lifeboat’s arrival in Castletownbere at 9.45 a.m.

He was landed at the Slip at the eastern end of the pier  and the waiting ambulance transferred him to Bantry Hospital. Castletownbere lifeboat was refuelled and ready for service again by 10.10 a.m.. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Tony O’Sullivan, stated, “This has been a busy year to date with six call-outs and this is the third medical evacuation so far. The RNLI ensures that the lifeboat is available 24 hours a day to assist those injured at sea.”
