Spanish Fisherman brought ashore

 A Spanish fisherman with suspected heart difficulties was brought to safety yesterday evening by Castletownbere Lifeboat.

Valentia Coastguard Radio received reports from a 40 metre Vigo registered fishing vessel “Vieirasa Diaz’ that one of its crew members needed urgent medical attention.

 Castletownbere’s 52’ all weather lifeboat ‘Murray Loirne’, under command of  Deputy 2nd Coxswain P. Stevens and crew B. Gonnelly, D. Murphy, M. Cronin, M. O’Sullivan & L. Murphy, launched at 6.48 p.m. and proceeded to the vessel located three miles south of Blackball Head. The lifeboat was on scene at 7.13 p.m. and three lifeboat crew boarded the Spanish vessel to administer first aid and prepare the casualty for transfer. In calm conditions, the casualty was transferred to the lifeboat and taken immediately to Castletownbere. He was landed at the Slip at the eastern end of the pier at 7.53 p.m. and the waiting ambulance transferred him to Bantry Hospital where a spokesman described his condition as “comfortable”.
