Castletownbere lifeboat assisted a 30’ motor cruiser,
with three people on board, which was in difficulties in poor weather
conditions off the west
Cork
coast yesterday evening.
The boat had left Kenmare on route to Kinsale earlier in
the day when it experienced mechanical failure and put out an immediate
request for help. The boat had three persons on board one of whom had
serious sea-sickness. Castletownbere’s
RNLI Severn-class lifeboat “Annette Hutton”, under command of
Coxswain Brian Driscoll, and crew, Marney O’Donoghue, Paul Stevens,
Morgan O’Sullivan, Joe-Tim O’Sullivan, and Darren Morlsely, launched at just after
4.30 p.m.
and located the vessel at
5.20 p.m. adrift three miles south west of Blackball Head in west south
west force 5 winds with a moderate swell. Visibility was poor with fog.
Lifeboat crew managed to get the stricken vessel under tow
and the vessel was taken back to Castletownbere yesterday evening. The
three crew members on board, one of whom was a young boy, were taken to
Cork
by car. Commenting on the incident, Coxswain Brian O’Driscoll stated:
“It was fortunate that the boat called us when it did. With sea
conditions and visibility so poor, this incident could have had very
serious consequences.” The Castletownbere Lifeboat was back on her
mooring ready for service by 8.10. p.m.
