Injured Portuguese Fisherman Brought to safety.

A fisherman who had sustained a serious leg injury on board a Spanish trawler yesterday was brought to safety by Castletownbere lifeboat this afternoon.
Valentia Coastguard Radio received reports from Scottish registered 33 metre fishing vessel “Shark” that one of its crew members needed urgent medical attention as a result of an accident which took place on deck yesterday afternoon. The vessel based in La Coruna in Spain had a crew of 17 on board.

Castletownbere’s Severn class RNLI all weather lifeboat ‘Annette Hutton’, under command of Coxswain Brian O’Driscoll  and crew B. Gonnelly, M. O’Donoghue, P. Stevens, M. Murphy, , M. O’Sullivan. J.T. O’Sullivan Jnr, & M. Martin-Sullivan Jnr., launched at 12.55 p.m. . and proceeded to the vessel just at the entrance to Berehaven Harbour . The lifeboat was on scene at 1.03 p.m. and went alongside the Spanish vessel in force 5 west south west winds with slight sea conditions. Four lifeboat crew boarded the vessel and the casualty, a man in his mid thirties, was given first aid and prepared for transfer to the lifeboat. Once placed in a stretcher he was transferred to the lifeboat at 1.22 p.m. and taken immediately to Castletownbere. He was landed at the pier at 1.35 p.m. and a waiting ambulance transferred him to Cork University Hospital . The lifeboat was ready for service again by 2.05 p.m.
